This workshop with an elected council member offers pupils insights into local governance, to help spark their interests in politics. This is aimed at:
- Empowering and motivating pupils to get involved and make a difference in their communities.
- Inspiring a deeper understanding of politics on local, national and international levels.
- Increasing awareness of the role that local councillors play in shaping communities and policymaking.
It is led by Cardiff Youth Service and Cardiff’s Community Cohesion Team, supported by an elected council member.
What to expect
The workshop starts with an icebreaker activity to help pupils to start thinking about their communities. After this, your pupils can take part in these activities:
Community mapping activity
Pupils can explore and highlight key issues around their local area, coming up with ways to make a difference.
Pitching ideas to a councillor
A councillor will listen and respond to pupils’ ideas, providing feedback and discussion on raised issues.
Councillor question and answer session
A chance for pupils to ask a councillor questions on other wider issues.
Evaluation
To end the workshop, we will discuss what the pupils have gained from the experience and welcome their feedback.
