We offer primary schools the chance to visit County Hall each year. This 2-hour visit includes engaging activities that help pupils explore democracy in a meaningful way, supporting their development as ethical, informed citizens.
What to expect
During this visit, your pupils can experience:
Briefing on local democracy
This provides an overview of the democratic process in Cardiff. Pupils can:
- learn about the roles and responsibilities of a councillor, and
- meet an elected council member.
Interactive election demonstration
Pupils can experience democratic scenarios, such as casting a vote in a mock polling station.
Tour of the council chamber
Pupils can learn the basics of where, how and why decisions are made. This includes learning about:
- the decision-making processes within the council,
- how voting takes place in the chamber, and
- how the microphones and display systems work.
Information session with the Lord Mayor
Pupils can meet the Lord Mayor and learn about:
- what a Mayor is and does, and
- the significance of the Lord Mayor’s regalia.
Certificate presentation
We will present your pupils with a certificate from the Lord Mayor, or Deputy Lord Mayor, to say they have attended and learned about all things local democracy. We will also provide refreshments.
