The Democracy Ambassador Programme is an opportunity to empower your students with knowledge and skills based around democracy.
It is open to all primary and secondary schools across Cardiff.
What does the programme offer?
Your school can nominate ambassadors. The programme will give them access to resources and information on our lessons and activities. These are aimed at introducing democracy and its processes to your school, in a teacher and pupil-friendly way.
Find out more about what the programme can offer your school:
Visit County Hall
Pupils can visit County Hall, where they will:
- tour the council chamber,
- take part in a mock polling station activity,
- take part in a mock council meeting with the Lord Mayor,
- meet local councillors, and
- get a certificate of attendance.
Watch a video about touring the Council Chamber.
Digital dialogue: open dialogue with members
Digital dialogue is a classroom activity that gives pupils the chance to talk with councillors in their community. This can help them build their understanding of civic duties and responsibilities.
The activity is designed to help schools deliver the ‘ethical, informed citizens’ purpose of the new curriculum for Wales.
Host your own school elections
The programme can give pupils a realistic voting experience, preparing them for their first time voting. We will provide equipment such as:
- ballot boxes,
- polling booths, and
- signage.
Why sign up for the Democracy Ambassador Programme?
Sign up to the programme to enter a prize draw.
Four schools will each win £100 to support their resources. We will announce winners on 16 July 2025

Raising awareness:
By nominating Democracy Ambassadors, your school will play a crucial role in advocating for the democratic rights of young people in Wales.
Your ambassadors can either be:
- pupils in year 9 and over, or
- teachers.
The programme will equip ambassadors with resources and ideas to get pupils involved in democratic activities.
2
Increasing participation:
You can benefit from our partnerships with:
- Cardiff Council Curriculum team and Democratic Services,
- The Electoral Commission, and
- The Politics Project.
Through interactive sessions and discussions, students can develop a deeper comprehension of democracy.
3
Training and development:
We offer training sessions for ambassadors, to help integrate democracy education into their schools. You can learn best practices, share ideas, and work with fellow ambassadors to build skills and knowledge, to make a wider impact.
